What is Refractory Vermiculite?

Refractory vermiculite is expanded mica (hydrated phyllosilicate) that has been heat-treated to form lightweight, porous particles with outstanding thermal insulation and fire resistance.

It is chemically inert, odorless, and non-toxic, making it ideal for lining high-temperature furnaces, refractory castables, and insulation boards.
When combined with refractory cement or binders, vermiculite forms lightweight refractory concrete and insulation layers that resist extreme heat without cracking or shrinking.

Applications of Refractory Vermiculite in Kenya

1. Furnace and Kiln Insulation

  • Used as an insulating backfill behind refractory bricks and castables.

  • Reduces heat loss and enhances energy efficiency in kilns, boilers, and smelting furnaces.

  • Ideal for ceramic, metallurgical, and glass industries.

2. Refractory Castables and Mortars

  • Mixed with refractory cement to make lightweight insulation castables.

  • Enhances thermal resistance while reducing overall density.

  • Excellent for boiler linings, ladles, and high-temperature vessels.

3. Fireproof Boards and Panels

  • Used as a core material in fire-resistant wall panels, doors, and ceilings.

  • Provides long-lasting fire protection and sound insulation.

4. Foundry and Metal Processing

  • Serves as insulation around molten metal containers to prevent heat loss.

  • Also used as a packing or expansion layer in foundry ladles and crucibles.

5. Chimneys, Incinerators & Boilers

  • Provides insulation lining to prevent heat escape and condensation.

  • Extends the lifespan of refractory linings in incinerators, ovens, and thermal plants.
