SILICON MANGANESE (16/14) IN KENYA

Silicon manganese (16/14) in Kenya is mainly used as a major oxidizing agent in steel rolling mills in the production of steel and iron. We, Kingsman Eng. & Industrial Insulation company are the main suppliers of Silicon manganese (16/14) in Kenya and the whole of East African Market. Our silicon manganese is most preferred due to its high contents of silicon and manganese which is the perfect combination required in steel rolling mills.

Silicon manganese (16/14) is a chemical compound that results from a mixture of silicon and manganese. This chemical compound is an excellent element used in production of special steel alloys. Silicon manganese helps in enhancing the natural properties of steel, its aesthetic nature as well as improving its strength. On the other hand, Ferro manganese is an alloy of iron and manganese containing usually about 80% manganese. Ferro manganese is used mainly to counteract the bad effects of sulfur. It also acts as a deoxidizer and combines with sulfur, thereby improving the hot-working properties of the product.

Due to its stability, silicon manganese (16/14) is used in enhancing the durability and strength in steel by hardening it. it is also used in industrial and metallurgical applications, batteries and chemicals. However, it is highly needed in the steel production.

Manufacturing process of Silicon Manganese

Silicon manganese also known as ferro silico manganese (SiMn) is an alloy made up of manganese between 65% to 68%, silicon 16% to 21% and carbon 1.5% to 2%.

In its production, slag is smelted from very high carbon ferror manganese or a manganese core that has quartz flux and core. In this process very high temperatures of 3,800-4800 kilowatt-hours per tonne are used in order to convert quartz to silicon

Silicon Manganese in Steel Production

A standard silicon manganese contains about 14- 16% silicon content and 68% manganese. Carbon occupies a small percent is it is useful in enabling the chemical reaction between the compounds and steel. Silicon manganese can be used alone and sometimes it is combined with other elements and substances to form different alloys. The combination percentages of silicon manganese can be adjusted depending on the different properties needed on the steel being produced.

Silicon manganese is usually in three categories:

  • High carbon silicon manganese
  • Medium carbon silicon manganese
  • Low carbon silicon manganese
